Oppenheimer

Dunkirk

Rogue One

As a new Star Wars fan, this highly anticipated new film did not disappoint me. Perhaps my enthusiasm towards Star Wars isn't great enough to be called a fan, I simply love great movies and stories. To be honest, I have only watched the 7 movies and not other animation stories. Hence, the only small details or so called "Easter eggs" I caught on screen were the appearance of R2-D2 and C-3PO and Princess Leia.

When I watched episode IV last time, I remembered it was narrated that the Rebel stole the plan of the Death Star at a great cost. I never wonder and infer how they got it, I thought every story must have a beginning and you can't possibly trace all the stories to a starting point. So I thought that was the given background and no questions raised. After finishing the movie, I have the "eureka" moment that I know what happened before the episode IV. And also what the phrase "at a great cost" really means. The entire crew of the Rogue One sacrificed themselves to get the plan, and also those rebels who arrived to support them. I guess it is quite rare to have all the main characters die in the movie. I thought they would have found a way to escape from the planet. However, their deaths somehow make the movie more realistic and touching, and we have to remember that they are not the main characters of the series.

Another thing I noticed in this film is, besides the Chinese actor Donnie Yen, the element of humour. I don't quite remember if there are jokes in the original 6 films, apart from the conversations of C-3PO which are funny.

Overall, I love the story and this film. I anticipate more stories from Star Wars, Some say Star Wars is always political, maybe this is true, and I don't see any problem with that. Movie is an art itself, and an art is the way the artist express himself. "The Rebel is built on hope", it seems like this is the connection to the title of episode IV: A New Hope, but it can be interpreted in other ways. Hope is what we cling on, when we face oppositions and challenges.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

I was a Harry Potter fan. I started to read the first book of the series in primary four, about 3 years after I watched the movie on the big screen. I must admit I was very much attracted to the story plot, and the books were probably the only English novels I touched during that time. I guessed I have read the first and second books twice. The entire Harry Potter fever peaked at the last book, and slowly faded until part two of the last movie. I would say I grow out of it. Until the emergence of this new franchise.

Many details of the entire story I do not remember, including Newt Scamander as the author of the textbook "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them". Though I remember vaguely there is such a textbook which Harry studied. I do not remember he appears in the Chocolate Frog Cards as well. But that's the surprise, doesn't it? That many of the small tiny details are actually hidden somewhere throughout the series.

I would say it is a nice movie, at least to me. In a way it satisfies my curiosity of the wizarding world which Rowling created. It fills the knowledge gap as what happened before the age of Voldemort and Harry Potter. And the setting of 1920s adds another sense of mystery to me as the world back then was absolutely different from the world I live in now.

I guess it's every primary school kid's dream to receive an enrolment letter from Hogwarts. But as a kid I used to gauge how big is Hogwarts. My primary school had a total of 2000 students from primary one to six. It seems like there is just a handful of students in Hogwarts, far less than the crowd depicted on the stadium during a Quidditch match. It is also the only school in Britain. The population of the wizards and witches was quite a problem to me at that age as it didn't seem to make sense in my wild imagination. In the series we know there are other schools across the globe, it made me wondered was there a Chinese school in China and how about South East Asia. In this movie we finally have a glimpse of the wizarding community in America. They refer muggles as non-mag. And perhaps you might not need a passport but you need to apply for permit of a wand. Besides, there are others magical creatures apart from the ones introduced in the series.

Next, I am particularly fond of Eddie Redmayne in this movie as Newt Scamander. He gives that innocent looking face and the care-free spirit of a young adult pursuing his passion. I notice that he always bends his neck at an angle, is this the side effect from portraying Stephen Hawking? In the movie, Newt is very passionate about all the magical creatures, he will be a great vet in our world. That motivates me to be passionate about what I am doing now. Or perhaps the courage to pursue what I really wanted to do.

As I am reminded of the characters in the book series, there are indeed a lot of possibilities where each character's story can be expanded. There are many notable ones and also many less known ones such as Newt Scamander. Really looking forward to more stories even though there are some in Pottermore already. There will be another 4 more movies in this franchise, can't wait to see how the story unfolds!

My Favourite Scenes in Avengers 2

I have watched twice for Avengers: Age of Ultron. Apparently it is one of my favourite films. I just love to see how different superheroes with their distinct personalities interacting with each other. My favourite character is non other than the Ironman. To me, the advancement in technology is more appealing than any in built super powers. That's why I like Batman too. But Batman is darker than the humourous Ironman. And I always think myself is humourous.

In Avengers, each superheroes with their distinct characters and abilities, have to work together to achieve a common goal. It is not easy. In real life, it is the same scenario for us to work in a group. Some people have to compromise, some people have to put down their pride. Each one of them have their own weaknesses as well, which are easily manipulated as portrayed in the movie. We have flaws, regardless of how hard we strive for perfection.

Appreciate the friends who accept fully of who you are. Treasure them, and embrace them just like how they have hugged you tightly. You can't have all the world to agree with you. There are people who will stand with you in good and in bad times. Recognized that there will be same people who don't like you naturally, just like you would dislike some people at the first sight.

There are two scenes which I love in the Avengers 2. Can't really explain why but I just like it. I like that all superheroes are fighting together side by side.

I like how they eventually lined up together when they were scattered across the jungle.

This is the one when all of them were trying to protect the core.

Movies

I sort of starting to return to my previous routine, which is paying a visit to the cinema on every Friday. By previous I mean 2 years ago. Since I started A levels I developed the habit of watching a movie on every Friday, whether it is in the cinema or on my Vaio, cuddling someone. However, months later the routine was stopped, perhaps due to the stress of perceived tough examinations and lack of appealing films.

This time, I come to a point which I must squeeze the movie slot in even though I have a very tight schedule. You can say the condition is desperate, or in a more negative sense, chronic. Why. Is it to release stress? I would feel even more stressful after watching one. I don't know what am I searching for. Again, I am lost. I hate to have such Friday routine again, I just don't want to do stuff the way I did last time. I do laundry on a different day, I avoid taking public bus, I cut my nails on weekdays. I even try to phase out the clothes I used to wear. Psychologically, I am hoping that with a different routine I could block out some memories.

Maybe subconsciously I am searching for meaning. My mind and body wander aimless following the crowd. To the lecture theater, to the cafeteria.

Movies provide an escape from the real life. So often I want to let go and run away. But the problem is, where can I run to. When each movie is coming to the end, my heart is filled with emptiness again.

I came to a conclusion that some wounds can never be healed, move on and live with it is the only way. However, I am not acclimatized to carry it with me yet. Anyway, I am preparing for the day to come, it could be my worst day ever in this year, maybe slightly better than the day I had earlier this year. Garnering all the courage and be there for you on that day. Sometimes you just couldn't let someone down, even if it means you might not have any pieces of you left. Just buck it up.

The Fault In Our Stars

It has been quite a long time since I wrote about a movie. This movie is about the love story between two pernicious cancer patients. Frankly, I almost cried when I was watching the movie. But many thoughts came after the movie while I reflected on the story.

Everyone has problems. This is sort of a truth I arrive at after contemplating about life this year. And regardless of the intensity of the problem, as in no matter it is big or small, it deserves full attention and help to be solved. Just as there is no standard answer in life, some problems cannot be solved, you have to live with it. However, there is a possibility which the intensity of the problem can be reduced to a minimum level. The emotions elicited by the problems can be alleviated by tools. One easy method is to count your blessings, to be thankful for all things. I still have a healthy body, I have eyes ears nose mouth limbs which are functioning.

I do not have cancer.

Yes, thinking about the less fortunate will make us grateful towards what we own. However, we will soon forget about it and start to magnify our own problems. Looking at the physically challenged we are glad that we have legs but we start to lament that we don't have shoes. Perhaps this is our nature. I am working on it too, constantly reminding and be thankful that I am well blessed in many areas. This is real tough, as I am always blinded by my grief, self-wallowing in my loss.

Come back to the movie. If you are terminally ill will you desire to love and to be loved? There is not much worries for healthy individuals to start a relationship, but it requires a lot of courage and confidence for patients like them in the movie.

When you know you are dying, what is your fear. The thought of Augustus Waters best represents mine. How will I be remembered. Like him, I wanted to be great, to stand out of the 7 billion. Finally Hazel Grace enlightened him, and me too. I often hear a whisper in my mind, to achieve greatness one must be brought low first. Just like the bible says, those who want to be the head must be the tail, and the tail will be the head.

Okay.

Life of Pi

Premium Rush

Fixed gear. No brakes. Can't stop.

It is an awesome movie! After all the violent action movies like The Expendables 2 and sci-fi films like Total Recall, you would like to have some real-life-happening stories to view, to hear and to feel in the city.

Well, Premium Rush is definitely a good one. Not only the story line is unique and different, the way the director tells story is also new and impressive. You might have watched cars chasing after cars, jets rushing after jets, jets chasing after cars or cars chasing after motorcycles. What about a car chasing after a bike? And bikes chasing after bikes as well?

I don't even know there is a job called bicycle messengers exist on earth, at this age, until I have watched this movie. You see, we have courier service, email and so on, why would we need messengers. The case is, when all those high tech stuff fail, you still have back ups. This is probably the best job for the cycling-lovers. Haha.

By the way, this is the fifth movie we watched together. Too bad, CIMB Debit Card buy 1 free 1 promotion ends today. XD

Happy Independence Day! I would like to watch Premium Rush for a second time. See ya guys, can't stay long here. =P

The Amazing Spiderman

It have been a long time since I post about movies. Haha. I still watch movies, but recently my mood to blog is overcame by laziness.

Yah, I just watched Spidey last friday with Wee Rock alone. I know many of you may have watched it much earlier but guess what, we watched it by RM4 per person in GSC. Yeah. Thanks to CIMB debit card, we enjoyed the buy one free one promotion.

The story line is like more or less same. A weak college boy got bitten by a spider, then his strength increases and he could climb walls. His uncle died because of him letting go a criminal. He wears a mask and goes after the criminals to take revenge.

Even so, I like the amazing spiderman more than the previous one. This time Peter Parker is a lot more vibrant and playful, he is not that old dull boy slaving away in college any more. And he will have bruises too after a fight, showing that he is also human.

The lizard monster reminds me a lot of the dinosaurs in Ultraman. Lol.

The Avengers

First of all, wish you a very happy Labour Day!

When I was a little boy I always thought, aren't most of the super heroes live in the same New York city? But why they would never encounter each other when they are fighting crimes? While Spiderman is using all his strength to stop a train, where is Superman?

The Avengers answers the questions. This film finally brings many superheroes to work together as a team. Just the thought that the superheroes will save the world together is cool enough. Even though not all of the Marvel superheroes are in this film, it is still great, since too many cooks spoil the soup right.

Each of the superheroes potrayed in The Avengers has their own 'individual' films. I never make it to watch all of them but I watched The Ironman and The Hulk before. One thing I never knew is the Hulk is one of the superheroes too. Haha. My impression towards the Hulk is he is always destroying, bringing dentrimental effect to the city. However, I think he is the hero in this avengers as he kills the most of the enemies.

Ohya, seeing how the superheroes interact is a great fun. Each one of them has their own disctinct characters and ego. It is absolutely hard for them to cooperate. Just like a company with many talented people, a chinese proverb says a moutain cannot have two tigers. But with a little 'push', it can be done. Just like the Avengers, when they are irritated and have the same mind on doing something.

I will watch a second time in cinema. XD

Battleship

At first I thought this movie would be like one of those meaningless catasthrophic movies like Skyline or The Darkest Hour. That's why I refuse to buy a ticket to walk in the cinema, until last friday Jeffrey and I went to GSC One Utama to watch it in order to fill up our afternoon time.

I was wrong.

This movie is superb! They have a nice starting telling the audience how and why the aliens will come to the earth - NASA sent a message to the outer space first from Hawaii. Unlike The Darkest Hour, the invisible aliens just popped up out of the blue.

5 alien spaceships reached the earth but 1 communication ship is broken into pieces when they enter the atmosphere. So the other four stationed at Pacific Ocean and one is sent to the Hawaii Islands to 'borrow' the communication system.

How the navy fights against the aliens is also well reasoned, not too fantasy nor too fake.

Many lessons can we youngsters learn from it too. Even though the aliens are seemed invincible, the captains from different nations are still willing to think a way to defeat them and to protect their countries.

One thing I like about the main character is the way he thinks. When his destroyer is shattered by the aliens, he thinks of using an old battleship, which is used as a museum at Hawaii. His crew members think he is insane to use such lousy battleship to fight against the aliens with advance weapons. Through their cooperation and strategy from The Art of War, they wipe all the aliens off the surface of the earth.

Ya, it is not how advance your weapons that matters, it is how your strategy works.

It is not how much knowledge you possess that matters, it is how you use them and the way you think.
